Banality of studentism

Think of it like this. You’re sitting at the bottom of a pond, which is frozen over, and you look up at the surface and you see a reflection of yourself. Now you might think you’re looking at another person sitting at the bottom of another pond, looking back at you.

But in this case, I’m staring up at the surface and seeing a time-delayed reflection of myself in friends who have already made the transition and also in those who have yet to wake up.

I liken it, in a way, to Arendt’s thesis on the banality of evil. It is the process that students engage in of normalizing the unthinkable i.e. doing things in an organized and systematic way that rests on ‘normalization.’  This is the process whereby silly, monotonous, cyclical, and mundane acts become routine and are accepted as ‘the way things are done.’

Don’t misinterpret me; I’ve had a great five years normalizing the unthinkable, along with a great swathe of my friendship group. We’ve partied into the silly hours of the o’clock, been on adventures across borders, pushed limits and tested boundaries, and found a group of people I’m very glad to say I know very well; my friends.

It’s just time to grow up :)
