So I was clearing through some old paperwork over the weekend, putting off reading through the actual stuff I needed to look through for work, and I came across one of the papers I had published a few years ago. This one, looking at asteroid studies and impact hazards, was published by Geoverse back in January of 2009 and it had been a couple of years since I had even seen it myself. I was therefore really amused to find that my paper had been quoted and used in online discussions on a variety of subjects including one on thehackersparadise.com about being 6 hours from the end of everything and another on an alternative history discussion board discussing what would happen if the asteroid I discussed had impacted Antarctica. Anyway, it was all extremely self-gratifying to see something I had written as an off-shoot from a university undergraduate assignment continues to be discussed and debated across the web..
Since leaving the academic world I haven’t had as much opportunity to pursue my research interests, especially in the geographic spheres I based my degree in. So I thought that, as an objective for 2012-13, I should find a topic of interest and frame a research question to investigate. No decisions yet but thinking that it’ll be somewhere in climatological studies.. although I’m very tempted to update and refocus the original paper on asteroid hazards into the practicalities of preventative measures to guard against impacts.
We’ll see.
